Historical Beginning- Johnson City Community Concert Band

On Thursday, September 29, 1983, members of the Johnson City community finally realized their vision of forming a community concert band that would perform for community events and would provide adult citizens of Northeast Tennessee an opportunity to practice and perform music as a community service. October 3rd was the first rehearsal of the Johnson City Civic Band, now known as the Johnson City Community Concert Band (JCCCB).
Originally sponsored by the Johnson City/Washington County Chamber of Commerce, a task force of Johnson City musicians got together to form the Band. The task force members included Joe Hermann, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) band director, Dr. David Tiffany, ETSU Associate Vice President, Mark Bays and Richard Williams, both high school band instructors.
Over the years the band has had several directors, assistant directors and has rehearsed in several locations in the Johnson City area. Joe Hermann was the Band's first director and was one of the task force members that helped form the band. Past conductors also included George Jones, Lee Ruffin, Randy Coapstick, Tom Stites, Paul Hinman, Joe Borden, Mike Smith, Roxanne Haskill, and Mark Foster. One thing however has stayed the same; the band has grown and improved each year in the quality of members and quality of performances (see the reprint of a news article below about the Band). The Johnson City Community Concert Band is an all volunteer, non-profit, concert band whose members are from all over Northeast Tennessee.

Today's Johnson City Community Concert Band

Today the band is made up of approximately 60 members and associate members who have a diverse background in music, from professional band directors to non music professionals of all ages that just want to continue the joy of playing music and performing. The band has several associate members (under 18) that are interested in playing challenging music.
